Workplace Relationships

me: sorry I missed your birthday party.

co-worker: it's ok.

me: I got your invitation, and I wanted to be there. It just completely slipped my mind.

co-worker: when I said, "it's ok" I really meant, "I didn't actually want you to come." You would have spent the whole time making fun of me.

me: well that's ...fair.


customer (to co-worker): wow, you should play the piano, you have such long fingers!

me: that's nothing. You should see her toes.

co-worker: (glares)


Also, the following all-purpose response didn't fly the last time I screwed up at work. Maybe you could try it.

"this is at least fifty percent your fault for hiring me."
